Information on the most widely used ASTM standards within the materials testing industry
Test Principle
The shear strength of adhesive bonds is determined by applying a longitudinal tensile force to a single lap joint with close contact or thick glue lines between two rectangular wooden adherents made of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). The joints are loaded to rupture.
In practice: a 20 × 10 mm = 200 mm² bonded area is sheared in the grain direction; the failure load divided by 200 mm² gives the shear strength fᵥ.
Test Equipment required for EN 302-1 Wood Adhesive Longitudinal Tensile Shear Strength Test
| Tensile testing machine | Two acceptable operation modes:
|
| Hinged wedge grips | Firmly hold specimens without slippage during tensile loading, guaranteeing axial alignment of specimen long‑axis with load direction. |
| Wood‑working tools | Planer, saw, grooving cutter, abrasive paper P100 (ISO 6344‑2) for surface preparation of beech panels. |
Test Specimen Information:
Substrate wood
Species: beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), untreated, straight-grained
Density (700 ± 50) kg/m³ at (12 ± 1) % moisture content
Angle α between annual rings and the bonding surface: 30°–85°; the two panels are assembled with annual rings forming a "herringbone pattern".
Panel preparation
Panels planed, with or without ≈ 14 mm wide grooves; cut to ≥ 300 mm (with cross-cut allowance) × ≥ 130 mm (with width-of-cut allowance)
Close contact: two panels of (5.0 ± 0.1) mm
Thick glue line: one (5.0 ± 0.1) mm panel + one [(5.0 ± 0.1) + h] mm grooved panel; for h > 1 mm, two grooved panels of (5.0 ± 0.1) + h/2 may be used
Grooves: depth h = 0.3 / 0.5 / 1.0 / 2.0 / 4.0 mm, width ≈ 14 mm, ending 5 mm from the side edges
Bonding
Not more than 24 h before bonding, lightly plane or lightly sand each bonding surface with P100 abrasive; remove dust; do not touch or soil the surfaces
For thick glue lines, only pre-mixed adhesives are suitable
Clamping pressure (0.8 ± 0.1) N/mm² uniformly distributed, or as recommended by the manufacturer
Exception: specimens with bond line > 1 mm for adhesive type GF (per EN 301, EN 17334, EN 17418) shall be produced pressureless — a narrow slot (~2 mm wide, ~2 mm deep) between groove end and adherent edge is a recommended method
Test piece geometry
Cut five strips of width b = (20.0 ± 0.1) mm along the grain, avoiding the outer 7.5 mm of the panel edges; cut to length l₁ = (150 ± 5) mm; distribute test pieces from one board randomly among treatment classes
Cut flat-bottomed notches of (2.5 ± 0.5) mm width across the grain so that an overlap l₂ = (10.0 ± 0.1) mm is defined in the middle section, centred in the groove for thick glue lines; the cut must separate the wood and adhesive layers but must not go beyond the adhesive layer.
Key derived value: A = bonded test surface = b × l₂ = 20.0 × 10.0 = 200 mm², and the notches are what force failure to occur inside this defined 200 mm² overlap.

Test Procedures for EN 302-1 Wood Adhesive Longitudinal Tensile Shear Strength Test
Panel preparation: Plane beech timber into panels; machine grooves if thick glue‑line specimens are needed. Condition raw panels under standard climate.
Bond assembly preparation: Sand/plan bonding surfaces ≤24 h before gluing, remove dust. Apply adhesive following manufacturer instructions (mixing, open‑time, assembly pressure). Assemble panels under defined pressure to form bonded assemblies for close‑contact or thick glue‑line joints.
Post‑bond conditioning: Store bonded assemblies for 7‑14 days under standard climate (minimum 3 days curing before cutting specimens).
Machine test‑pieces: Saw bonded panels into b=20mm strips; cut strips into 150‑mm long specimens. Mill cross‑grain notches to create the 10‑mm single‑lap overlap joint.
Pre‑test conditioning: Subject specimens to one pre‑treatment (A1‑A8) according to test scheme.
Mechanical tensile‑shear test: Mount specimen in hinged testing‑machine grips, apply tensile load at specified rate until fracture; record maximum failure load. Assess wood‑failure ratio visually.
Data processing: Calculate shear‑strength for each valid specimen; compute arithmetic mean, minimum value, standard deviation and coefficient of variation from first 10 valid replicates.
Industry Application Fields
Adhesive classification & CE/ETA/DoP support: compliance assessment against EN 301 (phenolic & aminoplastic), EN 15425 (1-component PUR), EN 16254 (EPI), EN 17334 (glued-in rods) and EN 17418 (2-component epoxy/PUR for on-site repair of cracked timber).
End-use sectors: glulam and CLT manufacturers, finger-jointing plants, structural timber and LVL producers, glued-in rod connections (e.g. moment-resisting timber joints), and on-site structural repair / strengthening with injected epoxies.
Users: adhesive manufacturers (R&D, batch QC), accredited testing laboratories and certification bodies, glulam/CLT producers for incoming-material verification, specifiers and procurement (minimum shear strength + wood failure in specifications), and researchers benchmarking new bio-based or filled adhesive formulations.
Regulatory context: published in support of EN 1995 (Eurocode 5) — the design code assumes durable bond integrity, and EN 302-1 is the evidence base for that assumption.

ISO 6237 Adhesives – Wood-to-wood adhesive bonds – Determination of shear strength by tensile loading.
ISO 6237 specifies a laboratory method for determining the shear strength of wood-to-wood adhesive bonds using a standard specimen loaded in tension under strictly defined conditions of preparation, conditioning, and testing. It is intended only for adhesives used in bonding wood to wood in either parallel-laminated or cross-laminated construction, and is not intended for testing manufactured/finished products.
ASTM D1002 is the most widely used standard test for measuring the apparent shear strength of metal‑to‑metal adhesive single‑lap joints under tension loading. It provides comparative data for adhesive selection, process control, and quality assurance in structural bonding applications. It is the most common test for evaluating adhesive shear performance.
ASTM D897 prescribed a method for determining the comparative tensile properties of adhesive bonds in a standard specimen when tested under specific conditions. Its primary purpose was to measure the tensile strength of an adhesive bond between two rigid substrates (metal to metal).
ASTM D412 test methods cover procedures used to evaluate the tensile (tension) properties of vulcanized thermoset rubbers and thermoplastic elastomers. These methods are not applicable to ebonite and similar hard, low elongation materials.
ASTM D412 is the primary standard for evaluating the tensile properties of vulcanized thermoset rubbers and thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs). It provides precise procedures for determining critical mechanical characteristics that define material performance under stretching forces.
The methods appear as follows:
Test Method A—Dumbbell and Straight Section Specimens
Test Method B—Cut Ring Specimens
ISO 812:2017 specifies a method for determining the lowest temperature at which rubber materials do not exhibit brittle failure or the temperature at which half of the test pieces used in a test fail when impacted under specified conditions.
The temperatures thus determined do not necessarily relate to the lowest temperature at which the material can be used since the brittleness will be affected by the conditions of test and especially by the rate of impact. Data obtained by this method are, therefore, intended to be used to predict the behaviour of rubbers at low temperatures only in applications in which the conditions of deformation are similar to those specified in the test.
ISO 37 and ASTM D412 are both widely recognized tensile test methods designed to evaluate the stress-strain characteristics of various rubber materials, including natural rubber, synthetic rubber, silicone rubber, and thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs). While both standards aim to determine the tensile properties of rubber and elastomers, they differ in their specific methodologies and applications.
ASTM D2137: Standard Test Methods for Rubber Property--Brittleness Point of Flexible Polymers and Coated Fabrics
ASTM D2137 test method is used to evaluate the brittleness of rubber materials, or rubber coated fabrics, when exposed to low-temperature flex with an impact under specified conditions of striker speed. ASTM D2137 tests performed will be used to determine the lowest temperature at which rubber compounds will not show fractures or coating cracks when exposed to specified impact conditions.
EN 205 specifies the test method used to assess adhesives for wood and derived timber products for non-structural applications, measuring the tensile shear strength of lap joints. This standard evaluates adhesive resistance to hot and cold water ageing and verifies bond strength with a thin bond line of approximately 0.1 mm. UnitedTest delivers reliable EN 205 wood adhesive testing instruments for adhesive formulation research, factory quality control and third-party laboratory certification.
EN 302-1 Adhesives for load-bearing timber structures – Test methods – Part 1: Determination of longitudinal tensile shear strength
EN 302-1 measures the shear strength of an adhesive bond in a single-lap joint made from beech, loaded in tension to rupture, either as a close-contact glue line (≤ 0.1 mm) or as a thick glue line / gap joint (0.3 – 4.0 mm). Its declared purpose is to generate performance data for classifying adhesives for load-bearing timber structures according to their suitability for defined climatic environments. It is explicitly not a structural design tool and does not necessarily represent in-service performance of a bonded member.
