Information on the most widely used ASTM standards within the materials testing industry
ASTM D6241, ISO 12236
Geotextile puncture test fixture is suitable for the CBR puncture strength test of geosynthetics. It uses a flat-ended plunger to measure the CBR puncture strength of geosynthetics, which is the force recorded when the plunger penetrates the sample at a constant displacement rate. It is used for geotextiles, geomembranes, and their composite products, but is not suitable for materials with apertures larger than 10 mm.
Geotextile puncture test fixture can test geotextiles, plastic films, protective clothing, etc. according to ASTM-D6241-B, DIN EN ISO12236, ASTM-D5748, EN388

Operation Precautions:
Specimen Preparation: Cut the geotextile into circular specimens with a diameter 20–30 mm larger than the inner diameter of the clamping ring to ensure reliable clamping. Avoid stretching or folding the specimen during cutting.
Clamping Operation: Apply uniform force when tightening the clamping ring to prevent local stress concentration that may cause premature rupture of the specimen.
Probe Maintenance: Regularly check the tip of the cone probe for wear or deformation; replace the probe if the tip radius exceeds the allowable deviation (>1.0 mm).

Standard
ISO 12236 puncture test (CBR test) is the principal international standard for measuring the static puncture resistance of geosynthetics using a 50-mm plunger. Its results are a key indicator of a material's performance in applications requiring resistance to localized, sustained pressure.
ASTM D6241 Standard Test Method for Static Puncture Index Strength of Geotextiles and Geotextile-Related Products Using a 50 mm Probe.
Puncture resistance is a critical property of geotextiles used in various civil engineering applications, such as soil reinforcement, erosion control, and drainage systems. ASTM D6241 is an index test method for measuring the static puncture strength of geotextiles and geosynthetic - related products using a 50 - mm diameter cylindrical probe, also known as the CBR (California Bearing Ratio) puncture test, which is widely used for product acceptance testing and engineering quality control.
