EN 196‑1 Cement Strength Test | Compressive & Flexural Strength of Cement Mortar

EN 196‑1 is the key European standard for testing cement strength, covering the determination of mandatory compressive strength and optional flexural strength using standard cement mortar prisms. Applicable to all general‑purpose cements defined in EN 197‑1, this standard excludes ultra‑fast‑setting cement types.

The standard defines jolting compaction as the official reference specimen preparation procedure. It also lays out formal validation requirements for alternative vibration compaction tables and the usage of CEN standard sand to guarantee consistent, comparable test results across European cement laboratories and manufacturing facilities.

UnitedTest designs and manufactures cement strength testing machines fully compliant with EN 196‑1. Our test equipment delivers precise and repeatable compressive and flexural strength readings for standard mortar prisms, ideal for cement plant quality control, construction material laboratories, third‑party inspection and cement formulation research.

Test Principle and test methods:

A fixed-proportion standard mortar (1 mass part cement : 3 mass parts CEN Standard sand : 0.5 mass water, water-cement ratio = 0.50) is mechanically mixed.

Fresh mortar is compacted into three-gang steel prismatic moulds either via reference jolting machine or validated electromagnetic vibrating tables.

Moulded specimens cure 24 hours in high-humidity cabinets, then demoulded and fully submerged in temperature-controlled water until specified test ages (24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 7 d, ≥28 d).

Optional three-point flexural test breaks each prism into two halves to calculate tensile bending strength.

Each broken prism half undergoes axial compressive loading until failure to record maximum crushing load for compressive strength calculation.

Step-by-Step Full EN 196-1 Cement Compressive and Flexural Strength Test

Step 1 Standard Mortar Mixing

Add cement and water to mixer bowl, start low-speed mixing immediately.

After 30 seconds low-speed mixing, steadily add CEN sand over 30 seconds, switch to high speed for another 30 seconds mixing.

Pause mixer for 90 seconds; scrape mortar stuck to bowl walls into the bowl centre within the first 30 seconds of pause.

Resume high-speed mixing for final 60 seconds to achieve homogeneous mortar.

Step 2 Specimen Compaction (Reference Jolting Method)

Secure oiled three-gang mould and filling hopper to jolting table.

Fill first half-depth mortar layer, spread evenly with large spreader, apply 60 jolts compaction.

Fill second overfilled mortar layer, level with small spreader, compact with a further 60 jolts.

Remove hopper, strike off excess mortar with metal straight-edge using sawing transverse strokes, wipe mould edges clean and label for identification.

Step 3 Specimen Conditioning & Water Curing

Cover filled mould with impermeable plate, place flat in moist cabinet without stacking for 20–24 hours.

Carefully demould prisms to avoid surface damage, mark with water-resistant ink.

Fully submerge marked specimens in temperature-controlled water tank on separating grates until scheduled test age.

Step 4 Optional Flexural Strength Test

Place prism horizontally on two support rollers, central loading roller aligned mid-span.

Apply steady 50±10 N/s vertical load until the prism fractures into two separate halves; store halves under damp cloth ready for compression testing.

Step 5 Mandatory Compressive Strength Test

Centre each fractured prism half on compression machine platens with ~10 mm end overhang.

Increase load continuously at 2400±200 N/s until specimen collapses, record peak breaking force.

Calculate average compressive strength from six half-prism results after removing statistical outliers.

Step 6 Validation Testing (Sand / Vibration Equipment)

20 paired mortar batches are prepared (reference material vs test sand/equipment). 28-day compressive strength deviation factor D is calculated; only D <5.0% qualifies the sand or vibration table as CEN-compliant.

ASTM C109 Compression Testing of Cement Mortar

ASTM C109 is the fundamental test method for determining the compressive strength of hydraulic cement using 2-inch (50-mm) mortar cubes. It specifies a standardized procedure to prepare, cure, and test 50-mm (2-in.) cube mortar specimens for compressive strength. The mortar mix ratio is 1 part cement to 2.75 parts standard sand (by mass). For Portland/air-entraining Portland/Portland-limestone cements, water content is fixed; for other cements, water is adjusted to achieve a flow of 110±5 (per 25 drops on a flow table, ASTM C230). Specimens are compacted in two layers by tamping, cured, and loaded in compression until failure to calculate strength as peak load divided by cross-sectional area.

ISO 679 cement compressive and flexural strength test method

ISO 679 determining the compressive strength (and optionally flexural strength) of cement, using a standardized mortar mix rather than testing pure cement paste or concrete. It is the benchmark that allows different cements from different plants and countries to be compared on a level playing field.

FAQs for EN 196-1 Cement Strength Test (With UnitedTest Equipment Guidance)

EN 196-1:2016 is the CEN reference method for determining the compressive and (optionally) flexural strength of cement mortar using 40 × 40 × 160 mm prism specimens prepared with a standardized 1:3:0.5 mortar (1 part cement, 3 parts CEN Standard Sand, 0.5 parts water). It is the mandated test method for conformity assessment of cements under EN 197-1 and is implemented as a national standard across all CEN member countries.

Q1: What is EN 196-1:2016 and what is its core purpose?

A1: EN 196-1:2016 is the mandatory European harmonized standard for cement strength testing, part of the full EN 19 cement test series. It defines unified lab procedures to measure mandatory compressive strength and optional flexural strength of 40×40×160 mm cement mortar prisms. All EU cement plants, construction labs and third-party certification bodies use it to verify if cement meets EN 197-1 strength classes (32.5 / 42.5 / 52.5 MPa). It also regulates validation of CEN Standard sand and alternative vibration compaction equipment.

Q2: Why is the EN 196-1 test extremely important for cement & European construction?

A2: Legal grading baseline: Cement cannot be sold or used in EU infrastructure without passing EN 196-1 strength testing, per European construction regulations.

Structural safety guarantee: Cement is the binder of all concrete; substandard strength leads to building cracks, bridge degradation or catastrophic collapse.

EU single market harmonization: Uniform test rules eliminate cross-country retesting barriers for cement import/export.

Production fault detection: Abnormal strength results reveal defective clinker burning, poor grinding or contaminated CEN sand.

Dispute arbitration standard: The reference jolting method is legally recognized for commercial/regulatory conflicts.

Lab accreditation requirement: ISO/IEC 17025 accredited labs must fully comply with EN 196-1 procedures.

Q3: What specimen size and mortar ratio does EN 196-1 require?

A3: Specimen: 40 mm × 40 mm × 160 mm rectangular prisms. Fixed mass mortar mix: 1 cement : 3 CEN Standard sand : 0.5 water (W/C = 0.50). One batch for 3 prisms uses 450 g cement, 1350 g certified CEN sand, 225 g water.

Q4: What two compaction methods are allowed under EN 196-1? Which one counts for disputes?

A4: Reference jolting apparatus (authoritative for all disputes) – mandatory for arbitration, audit and certification tests.

Validated vibration tables (Type A / B in Annex A) – only permitted after full CEN third-party validation. If test results conflict, jolting machine results take priority.

UnitedTest manufactures fully compliant EN 196-1 jolting tables and certified vibration compaction machines for European labs.

Q5: When should I discard a compressive strength test result (outlier rule)?

A5: If one single compressive result differs by more than ±10% from the 6-piece batch average, discard that value. If two or more outliers exist, the entire batch test is invalid and must be repeated.

Q6: Is EN 196-1 the same as ISO 679?

A6: They are technically very close – both use the same 1:3:0.5 mortar, 40×40×160 mm prisms, jolting compaction, and 20°C water curing . EN 196-1:2016 is the European implementation of the same methodology family as ISO 679:2009. The key differences are:

EN 196-1 requires CEN Standard Sand (validated against CEN Reference sand per Clause 11)

EN 196-1 has more detailed equipment tolerances and validation procedures

EN 196-1 explicitly allows validated vibrating tables A & B as alternatives (Annex A)

Both are referenced by their respective product standards: EN 197-1 (Europe) and various ISO cement standards.

Q7: Is flexural strength testing mandatory under EN 196-1?

A7: No, flexural test is optional. Only compressive strength is a mandatory compliance index. Labs may break prisms via non-damaging mechanical methods if skipping flexure testing.

Q8: What loading speeds are regulated for flexure and compression tests?

A8: Flexural test: Constant load rate 50 ±10 N/s

Compressive test: Constant load rate 2400 ±200 N/s

UnitedTest’s integrated flexure-compression testers feature closed-loop speed control that auto-locks to EN 196-1 standard loading rates.

Q9: Does UnitedTest produce machines fully compliant with EN 196-1:2016?
