ISO 2782-1 Rubber Gas Permeability Tester | Differential Pressure Test Machine | UnitedTest

UnitedTest manufactures high-precision ISO 2782-1 compliant gas permeability testers, specially designed for accurate gas permeation performance testing of vulcanized rubber and thermoplastic rubber materials.

ISO 2782-1 Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic — Determination of permeability to gases — Part 1: Differential-pressure methods defines three professional differential-pressure test procedures exclusively for rubber materials with a hardness of 35 IRHD or above. This standard evaluates gas permeation properties under precisely controlled gas partial pressure differences.

Capable of testing both single pure gases and mixed gas blends, the ISO 2782-1 test system measures four core permeation parameters to complete comprehensive material characterization for vulcanized and thermoplastic rubber. Our professional testing equipment fully complies with all standard procedures, delivering stable and repeatable test data for rubber product R&D, quality control and industrial performance verification.

Test Principle

A test cell (constant T) is split by the rubber test piece into high-pressure side (test gas) and low-pressure side.

Gas permeates through the rubber to the low side.

Quantity on low side is detected by pressure sensor (Methods 1 & 2) or gas chromatograph (Method 3).

From the p–tcurve, steady-state slope gives GTR; extrapolation back to t-axis gives delay time θ → diffusion coefficient D → solubility S via Q = D·S.

Three Specific Standardized Test Methods

Method 1: Full Vacuum Pressure Sensor Method

Outputs: GTR, gas permeability coefficient (Q), gas diffusion coefficient (D), gas solubility coefficient (S)

Core feature: Fully evacuates low-pressure chamber before introducing test gas;

extrapolates transmission curve delay time θ to calculate diffusion and solubility coefficients, enabling full fundamental polymer permeation research.

Best for: R&D, new rubber compound development, fundamental diffusion/solubility mechanism study.

ISO 2782-1 Gas permeability test of rubber and thermoplastic by differential-pressure method

Method 2: Simplified Pressure Sensor MethodOutput: Gas permeability coefficient (Q) only (no diffusion/solubility data)

Core feature: Streamlined purge & pressurization workflow without full deep degassing for long delay-time calculation; faster testing cycle.

Best for: Factory routine quality control, batch specification verification, production design validation where only permeability is required.

Method 3: Gas-Chromatographic (GC) Method

Output: GTR and gas permeability coefficient (Q) for individual gas components in mixtures

Core feature: Uses gas chromatography to separate and quantify each permeating gas from multi-component blends (air, LPG, coal gas, etc.); tolerates water vapor in test gas.

Blank sampling correction eliminates background gas interference.

Best for: Multi-gas service simulation (e.g., fuel hoses, gas seals exposed to mixed hydrocarbon gases).

Test Specimen Requirements

Material Eligibility: Vulcanized rubber, thermoplastic rubber, hardness ≥35 IRHD only (foams, soft rubber <35 IRHD excluded).

Dimensions: Thickness 0.1 mm – 2.2 mm unless agreed by parties; disc/rectangular size larger than cell sealing gasket to avoid bypass leakage.

Thickness Measurement: Minimum 5 measurement points (including center), precision 0.01 mm per ISO 23529. Single specimen thickness deviation ≤10% from its average; batch average deviation ≤10%.

Test Procedures: ISO 2782-1 Gas permeability test of rubber and thermoplastic by differential-pressure method

Install mesh/filter paper support on low-pressure cell cavity.

Lightly coat cell sealing flanges with thin vacuum grease, mount pre-conditioned flat rubber specimen without wrinkles, fit O-ring.

Assemble upper high-pressure cell half, clamp with uniform force for complete airtight seal.

If testing above ambient temperature, heat cell to target test temperature and stabilize.

Close gas supply valves, open vacuum circuit; sequentially evacuate low then high chambers to ≤10 Pa vacuum. Hold vacuum long enough for full specimen degassing (overnight for low-permeability grades).

Isolate vacuum pump, monitor low-side pressure for spontaneous rise to check for leakage; re-seal if drift occurs.

Open test gas inlet valve, fill high-pressure chamber to target constant pressure; record upstream pressure (ph) and cell temperature (T).

Automatically log low-side pressure readings against elapsed time to generate transmission curve until consistent linear steady-state slope is achieved.

Extract steady-state dp/dt slope and extrapolate delay time θ from curve intercept for D & S calculation.

Compute GTR, Q, D, S via standard formulas, average results across minimum three specimens.

Vent cell, disassemble, clean sealing surfaces for next test piece.

FAQs for ISO 2782-1 (Rubber Gas Permeability Differential-Pressure Test)

Q1. What material does ISO 2782-1 apply to, and what's out of scope?

A1: Vulcanized and thermoplastic rubber, hardness ≥ 35 IRHD, thickness 0.1–2.2 mm (unless otherwise agreed). Typical samples: tire inner liners, inner tubes, rubber hoses (LPG/coal gas), seals, diaphragms, balloons.

It does notcover plastics films (that's ISO 15105-1) or very soft rubbers (<35 IRHD) where the test piece would deform under ΔP even with a support.

Q2. Why does ISO 2782-1 have threemethods instead of one?

A2: Because rubber testing serves three different user needs:

MethodWhen to use it
Method 1 – Pressure sensor (vacuum)R&D, new compound development — you want all four parameters (GTR, Q, D, S)
Method 2 – Simplified pressure sensorRoutine QC / spec verification / design — you only need Q (permeability), and you don't want to run a vacuum pump on the low side
Method 3 – Gas chromatographicMixed gases (LPG constituents, coal gas) or moist gas (humid air in tire liners) — GC resolves each component

Q3: What vacuum level must the pump reach on the low-pressure chamber?

A3: The vacuum system must evacuate the low-pressure cavity down to ≤10 Pa before test gas injection. For ultra-low permeability rubber (e.g., tire inner liners), overnight full degassing is recommended to fully strip pre-absorbed gas inside the rubber matrix.

Q4: What rubber materials does ISO 2782-1 cover / exclude?

A4: Applicable: Vulcanized rubber, thermoplastic rubber with hardness ≥35 IRHD, thickness 0.1–2.2 mm single sheets.

Excluded: Soft rubber <35 IRHD, open-cell rubber foam, thin plastic films, metal foils, rigid polymers (use ISO 15105-1 for plastics instead)

Q5: How many test pieces are required for valid ISO 2782-1 testing?

A5: A minimum of three identical specimens is mandatory for formal lab testing. For internal factory quick QC, fewer samples may be used only with written mutual agreement between all involved parties.

Q6: What strict thickness rules apply to rubber test pieces?

A6: Measure thickness at minimum 5 points (including the specimen center) with precision 0.01 mm. Two hard limits:

Thickness deviation of one single specimen cannot exceed ±10% of its own average thickness.

Average thickness across all tested specimens cannot deviate ±10% from the overall batch average. Any sample breaking this rule must be discarded.

Q7: What is the purpose of the mesh/filter paper support in the low-pressure cell?

A7: Large pressure differentials can deform thin rubber sheets and create uneven permeation areas. Mesh or 0.1–0.3 mm filter paper holds the rubber flat without blocking gas flow, ensuring consistent effective permeation area A during the whole test cycle.

Q8: What four core permeation parameters are defined, and what do they represent?

A8: GTR (Gas Transmission Rate): Raw gas flux through rubber, independent of thickness, unit mol/(m²·s·Pa)

Permeability coefficient Q = GTR × d (d = average thickness): Intrinsic barrier property of rubber compound

Diffusion coefficient D: Speed gas molecules move through rubber polymer chains, calculated from transmission curve delay time θ

Solubility coefficient S = Q/D: How much gas the rubber material can absorb internally at a given pressure.

Q9 When do I need blank correction in the GC method?

A9 Always perform a blank run before/after formal testing to measure residual background gas trapped inside the sampling loop. Subtract blank volume Vb from collected permeated gas Vs to avoid overestimating GTR for mixed gas samples.

Q10 Why must we only use the linear steady-state segment for calculations?

A10 The early non-linear curve section corresponds to gas absorption into rubber polymer chains (transient unbalanced state). Only after the pressure-time curve becomes a straight line does adsorption-desorption equilibrium occur, delivering stable dp/dt slope data for accurate calculations.

Q11 Can the simplified sensor method calculate diffusion and solubility coefficients?

A11 No. The simplified procedure skips long degassing and curve extrapolation steps needed to measure delay time θ, so only permeability Q can be calculated.

Q12 Can ISO 2782-1 GC method test water vapor-containing mixed gases?

A12 Yes, this is a key advantage over plastic film standards like ISO 15105-1. The GC setup tolerates water vapor mixed into test gas and can quantify each individual gas component separately.

Q13 What is the core difference between ISO 2782-1 and ISO 15105-1?

A13 Target material: ISO 2782-1 for vulcanized/thermoplastic rubber ≥35 IRHD; ISO 15105-1 exclusively for thin plastic packaging films

Unique metrics: ISO 2782-1 calculates diffusion D and solubility S (not available in ISO 15105-1)

Temperature capability: ISO 2782-1 supports up to 80 °C high-temperature testing for industrial rubber service simulation

Specimen rules: ISO 2782-1 has strict 10% thickness deviation limits tailored for thick molded rubber sheetsISO.

Q14 Is ASTM D1434 equivalent to ISO 2782-1 for rubber testing?

A14 No. ASTM D1434 is designed for thin plastic films only; it lacks rubber-specific conditioning protocols, high-temperature cell hardware, and the ability to measure diffusion/solubility coefficients required for elastomer characterization.

Q15: Why is ISO 2782-1 testing critical for rubber manufacturers?

A15: Predict service life: Low permeability rubber retains air/fuel pressure for tires, hoses and inflatable goods, avoiding premature deflation and safety failures.

Full compound characterization: Only this standard delivers diffusion and solubility data to study how fillers, crosslink density, and polymer type alter gas transport in rubber during new formulation development.

Simulate real mixed-gas service environments: GC method measures separate permeation rates for fuel gas blends that plastic film standards cannot replicate.

Global supply chain compliance: Automotive IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 quality systems require ISO 2782-1 test records for gas-containing rubber components.

Optimize formulation cost: Test data guides adjustment of carbon black/clay filler loading to reduce gas permeability without overpriced specialty polymers.

Q16 Why is measuring both D and S important for rubber R&D?

A16 Permeability Q is the product of diffusion D and solubility S. Two different rubber compounds may have identical Q values but vastly different D/S ratios, leading to different long-term aging and gas retention performance. Separating D and S lets formulators identify exactly how polymer structure impacts gas absorption vs gas movement speed.

Q17 After full evacuation, low-side pressure rises rapidly before test gas is added. What is the fault?

A17 Two root causes:

Cell sealing leakage: Damaged O-rings, uneven vacuum grease coating, uneven clamping force, wrinkled rubber specimen. Reassemble and re-clamp the cell tightly.

Heavy specimen outgassing: Moisture or residual volatile plasticizers trapped inside rubber. Extend desiccation conditioning time before testing.

Q18 The pressure-time curve never forms a stable straight line (erratic slope).

A18 Common causes:

Test cell temperature fluctuates beyond ±1 °C during measurement

Rubber specimen has uneven thickness exceeding the standard 10% deviation limit

Vacuum pump micro-leaks continuously introduce background air

Insufficient degassing time leaves absorbed gas slowly releasing from rubber.
