Surgical Spinal fixation plate fatigue and static test system - four points bending
For spinal fixators, fatigue condition are generally investigated in the laboratory following procedures established by international standards: the ASTM F1717 and ISO 12189 describe two different setups to run tests able to predict the long-time reliability of a posterior spinal fixation construct.
Test methods for spinal plates:
Static bending test
Dynamic bending fatigue test
Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is a common spinal fusion surgery used to treat degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, spinal deformities, or non-union. This surgery typically involves inserting an interbody fusion device (cage) into the intervertebral space and using supplemental fixation devices such as anterior plates and pedicle screws to further stabilize the motion segment. These fixation systems are widely used to improve fusion rates and help patients regain their ability to walk more quickly. Early studies reported that 8-18% of patients experienced screw loosening. Dynamic loading before fusion is believed to lead to loosening, which in severe cases can result in non-union.
So the determination the fatigue performance for the Integrated Fixation Cage (or fixator) is very important.
