ASTM D4533 Tearing Strength Test of Fabrics, Geotextile by Trapezoid Procedure, Tear test fixture

ASTM D4533 Tearing fixture is suitable for determining the tearing strength of geosynthetic materials using the trapezoidal method, specifically the tearing force required to initiate and subsequently propagate a tear from an initial incision under specified conditions. It is applicable to various types of geotextiles and impermeable geomembranes. It complies with the standards set forth in ASTM D4533/D4533M-15(2023)(Test Method) Standard Test Method for Trapezoid Tearing Strength of Geotextiles; JTG E50-2006 "Method for Testing Geosynthetic Materials in Highway Engineering" and GB/T13763-2010 "Determination of Tearing Strength of Geosynthetic Materials Using the Trapezoidal Method."

Tear strength is the capacity of a material to withstand the tearing force required to propagate a tear after its initiation. The trapezoid tear produces tension along a reasonably defined course such that the tear propagates across the width of the specimen. The method can be used to analyze the relative tear resistance of different fabrics or different directions in the same fabric.
