Peel adhesion test fixture of self-adhesive tapes

ISO 29862

Peel adhesion test fixture of self-adhesive tapes is based on the standard ISO 29862, It is a professional device used to test the peel strength of tapes, adhesives, and other materials. It mainly simulates the peeling process in actual usage scenarios to obtain key parameters such as peel force and fracture value, in order to evaluate the physical properties and bonding quality of the materials.

ISO 29862 Self adhesive tapes — Determination of peel adhesion properties
ISO 29862 standard specifies a series of methods for the determination of peel adhesion properties of self adhesives tapes.

General introduction

UnitedTest manufactures professional peel adhesion test fixtures for self-adhesive tapes, fully compliant with ISO 29862 standard. This dedicated testing accessory accurately measures peel strength of self-adhesive tapes, pressure-sensitive adhesives and related bonding materials.

The ISO 29862 peel adhesion test fixture replicates real-world peeling conditions to capture critical test metrics including peel force and breaking load. Test data enables laboratories and manufacturers to assess material physical performance and verify overall bonding quality of adhesive products.

Covering the official specification: ISO 29862 Self adhesive tapes — Determination of peel adhesion properties. Our ISO 29862 peel adhesion fixture is widely matched with universal tensile testing machines, ideal for quality control, material R&D and incoming inspection of various self-adhesive tape products.

ISO 29862 standard specifies a series of methods for the determination of peel adhesion properties of self adhesives tapes. This standard specify for test methods as below:

—     Method 1: Self adhesive tapes – Measurement of peel adhesion from stainless steel at an angle of 180°;
—     Method 2: Self adhesive tapes – Measurement of peel adhesion from its own backing at an angle of 180°;
—     Method 3: Self adhesive tapes – Measurement of peel adhesion of double-sided and transfer tapes at an angle 180°;
—     Method 4: Self adhesive tapes – Measurement of adhesion of the liner to an adhesive tape at an angle of 180°.

Test procedure:
1, Sample preparation: Cut adhesive samples of appropriate size according to the requirements of ISO 29862 standard, and ensure that the bonding surface is clean and free of contamination.
A bonded flexible-to-rigid assembly is prepared using the adhesive under evaluation.
The rigid adherend can be metal, plastic, wood, or rubber with specified thicknesses.

2, Sample bonding: Apply the adhesive sample evenly on the testing surface and ensure that the bonding surface is flat and firmly adhered.

3, Parameter setting: Set the appropriate testing speed and peeling angle on the UnitedTest Universal Testing Machine/tensile tester. The testing speed is usually set to 100mm/min, but can be adjusted according to the different characteristics of the adhesive and material.
The test continues until at least 125 mm of the bonded length has separated.
The peel force is recorded over 100 mm, excluding the first 25 mm.

4, Start testing: Install the sample onto the tester and start the device to begin peeling testing. The tester will automatically record the force values during the peeling process and display the force/displacement curve in real time.

5, Result analysis: After the test is completed, the system automatically generates a detailed test report, including key data such as maximum peeling force and force/displacement curve. Based on these data, the adhesion of the adhesive can be evaluated.

The peel adhesion test fixture simulates real peeling conditions encountered in practical applications. During testing, the self-adhesive tape sample is firmly laminated onto the standard plate. The free end of the tape is secured to the moving jaw of the tensile tester. As the test machine pulls at a specified constant speed, the tape gradually peels away from the substrate surface.

The system continuously records key parameters:

Average peel adhesion force

Maximum peel load

Force fluctuation curve throughout the peeling process

Breaking force value

All test results support quantitative evaluation of adhesive performance and bonding quality of self-adhesive tapes, pressure-sensitive adhesives and similar adhesive materials.

Peel adhesion testing of various self-adhesive tapes: packaging tape, masking tape, double-sided tape, foam adhesive tape, protective film;

Standard

ISO 29862 Tape adhesion peeling test, Self adhesive tapes

ISO 29862 Self adhesive tapes — Determination of peel adhesion properties

ISO 29862 specifies peel adhesion force of pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes under controlled laboratory conditions. It covers four core 180° peel test methods plus two normative annexes for low-temperature and 90° peel testing, serving as a universal quality control and material comparison benchmark for adhesive tape manufacturers, laboratories and end users worldwide.

ASTM F88 Test Method for Seal Strength of Flexible Barrier Materials

ASTM F88 Standard Test Method for Seal Strength of Flexible Barrier Materials

ASTM F88 quantify the seal strength of flexible barrier packaging materials. It evaluates thermal heat-sealed or adhesive-bonded joints between flexible-flexible, flexible-rigid, or flexible-semi-rigid substrates by peeling cut test strips and recording separation force and failure modes.

ISO 4587 Adhesives Tensile Shear Test of rigid bond material

ISO 4587 Adhesives — Determination of tensile lap-shear strength of rigid-to-rigid bonded assemblies

ISO 4587 determining tensile lap-shear strength of adhesive single-lap joints between two rigid substrates, for comparative evaluation rather than structural engineering design data. UnitedTest manufactures high-precision ISO 4587 compliant lap-shear test machines, designed to evaluate the tensile shear performance of rigid-to-rigid adhesive bonded assemblies for industrial quality control and adhesive material comparison.

ASTM D897 Tensile Test of Adhesive Bonds

ASTM D897 prescribed a method for determining the comparative tensile properties of adhesive bonds in a standard specimen when tested under specific conditions. Its primary purpose was to measure the tensile strength of an adhesive bond between two rigid substrates (metal to metal).

ISO 8510-2 Adhesives 180 degree peel test for flexible-bonded-to-rigid test specimen assembly

ISO 8510-2: Adhesives — Peel test for a flexible-bonded-to-rigid test specimen assembly Part 2: 180° peel.

ISO 8510-2 specifies a 180° peel test for determining the peel resistance of a bonded assembly where one adherend is flexible and the other is rigid. Measures the peel resistance of structural liquid adhesive bonds where one adherend is flexible and the other rigid. It only applies to cured structural adhesives (epoxy, PU, wood glue, contact adhesives) – not pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes. It provides repeatable comparative peel force data for R&D, factory quality control, supplier qualification and commercial dispute resolution.

ASTM D903 Peel or Stripping Strength test of Adhesive Bonds

ASTM D903 — Standard Test Method for Peel or Stripping Strength of Adhesive Bonds

ASTM D903 evaluates 180° peel strength of structural adhesive bonds formed by permanent liquid adhesives, not pressure-sensitive (PSA) tapes. quantifies comparative stripping force required to separate a flexible substrate from a bonded rigid/flexible counter substrate, under standardized bonding, conditioning, and tensile test conditions.

Key concept: D903 measures the average load per unit width of bond line required to progressively separate one member from another at approximately 180° and at a separation rate of 152 mm (6 in.)/min. Results are expressed in kg/mm (lb/in) of width.

ASTM D3330 tape peeling test, Method for Peel Adhesion of Pressure-Sensitive Tape

ASTM D3330 Standard Test Method for Peel Adhesion of Pressure-Sensitive Tape

ASTM D3330 for measuring peel adhesion of all types of pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes, unifies six distinct test geometries to characterize interfacial bonding strength between PSA tape and substrates, tape backings, release liners, and transfer adhesive films, covering both 180° and 90° peel angles.
