Information on the most widely used ASTM standards within the materials testing industry
Model: MFI403, Plastometer ISO 1133, ASTM D1238
MFI403 Melt flow index tester is for melt mass-flow rate (MFR) and the melt volume-flow rate (MVR), determined by extruding molten material from the cylinder of a plastometer through a die of specified length and diameter under preset conditions of temperature and load. Used to measure the melt mass flow rate of thermoplastic plastics under specific temperatures and pressures, reflecting the flow performance of materials through standardized testing.
Feature of MFI403:
Large LCD display; both MFR/MVR test method; both manual and motorized cutting; with micro-printer.

Main Features
Mainframe is desk-top model, with beautiful appearance and stable performance, high accuracy, easy to use.
With high sampling, and high control rate.
With Micro-printer to print test result.
MFR and MVR method to meet most kinds materials.
Manual and motorized both way cutting sample.
Approximately 7 grams of the material is loaded into the barrel of the melt flow apparatus, which has been heated to a temperature specified for the material. A weight specified for the material is applied to a plunger and the molten material is forced through the die. A timed extrudate is collected and weighed. Melt flow rate values are calculated in g/10 min.
Specimen size:
At least 14 grams of material;
Test Data:
Flow rate = ( 600/t x weight of extrudate )
t = time of extrudate in seconds
melt flow rate = g/10 min.

Melt flow rate plays an important role in plastic processing and product molding.
It helps with quality control. Manufacturers use MFR to check the consistency of each batch of plastic. If the melt flow rate suddenly changes from one batch to another, it could indicate a problem, such as a material change or processing error. Detecting issues early can prevent bigger problems.
It also guides material selection. Different manufacturing methods require plastics with different flow properties. For example, injection molding is generally better suited to high MFR materials because they can flow quickly into complex molds. On the other hand, extrusion or blow molding may require plastics with low MFR to better control the flow.
MFR also affects the strength of the final product. In general, a low MFR means the plastic has a higher molecular weight, which can result in better mechanical strength and durability. High MFR makes plastics easier to process but may involve a trade-off in strength.
