ISO 3380 Leather Shrinkage Temperature Tester | UnitedTest

ISO 3380 (IULTCS IUP 16) determines leather shrinkage temperature up to 100 °C by heating specimens in water. UnitedTest supplies ISO 3380 compliant testing machines aligned with CEN/TC 289 for leather thermal‑property quality control.

ISO 3380 specifies a trusted laboratory procedure for measuring the shrinkage temperature (Ts) of leather, identifying the temperature point where a leather sample undergoes sudden contraction upon heating in aqueous conditions. This test corresponds to official IULTCS test method IUP 16 and aligns with European leather standardization under CEN/TC 289. Shrinkage temperature is a key indicator of tanning quality, hydrothermal stability and material durability for all grades of processed leather.

UnitedTest designs and manufactures high‑accuracy ISO 3380 compliant testing equipment for tanneries, footwear manufacturers, automotive leather suppliers and independent material‑testing laboratories.

Test Principle:

A rectangular leather test piece is held vertically under a small constant tension in distilled/de-ionized water. The water is heated at a controlled rate (2 °C/min). When the collagen structure of the leather denatures, the specimen undergoes a sudden contraction. The temperature at which this contraction corresponds to 0.3 % shrinkage from the specimen’s maximum length is recorded as the shrinkage temperature.

ISO 3380 Leather Shrinkage Temperature Test

Specific Test Methods

Dry samples: must be re-wetted by vacuum impregnation in a glass tube with distilled water (desiccator, <4 kPa for 1–2 min, then soak 1–6 h).

Wet samples: skip re-wetting, go straight to mounting.

Shrinkage is detected mechanically via a pointer/magnification system (≥5× amplification) linked to the moving clamp.

Heating continues until abrupt shrinkage occurs, water boils, or target temperature is reached.

Ts = temperature where pointer movement = 0.3 % length reduction from max length.

Test Specimen Information

1. Sampling shall follow ISO 2418 for sampling location rules. Measure specimen thickness per ISO 2589 before cutting test pieces.

2. Specimen dimensions:

   - If leather thickness ≤ 3 mm: rectangular strips 50 mm ± 2 mm × 3.0 mm ± 0.2 mm.

   - If leather thickness > 3 mm: rectangular strips 50 mm ± 2 mm × 2.0 mm ± 0.2 mm.

3. Specimen quantity: two test pieces parallel to the backbone, two perpendicular to the backbone. For larger batches, one per direction per hide/skin is allowed, provided total is ≥ 4 pieces for each direction.

Frequently Asked Questions (Q&A) of ISO 3380 Leather Shrinkage Temperature Test

Q1. What is ISO 3380?

ISO 3380:2015 (also IULTCS/IUP 16) is the international standard for determining the shrinkage temperature (Ts) of leather up to 100 °C by heating a specimen in water at a controlled rate and recording the temperature at which sudden contraction occurs.

Q2. Why is the shrinkage temperature important for leather?

Ts is a direct measure of collagen crosslink stability and tanning quality. Untanned hide shrinks near 55 °C; chrome-tanned leather often exceeds 100 °C. Low Ts means poor hydrothermal stability—leather may shrink, wrinkle, or harden during shoe lasting, autoclave cleaning, tropical storage, or automotive cabin heat exposure.

Q3. What is the basic principle?

A strip of leather is held under slight tension in distilled/de-ionized water and heated at 2 ± 0.2 °C/min. The temperature at which the specimen shows 0.3 % contraction from its maximum length is reported as the shrinkage temperature.

Q4: What does shrinkage‑temperature value mean for different tanned leathers?

A: ‑ Chrome‑tanned leather: Ts commonly >95 °C‑100 °C;

‑ Vegetable‑tanned leather: Ts normally ranges 72‑85 °C;

‑ Untreated raw hide: Ts around 60‑65 °C.

Higher Ts means better hydrothermal stability. Low Ts indicates incomplete tanning, and leather risks hardening, shrinking or deformation under humid‑heat environment.

Q5. Do I need to condition leather before the test?

No. Unlike many leather physical tests, ISO 3380 requires no climatic conditioning. Dry samples must be vacuum-rewetted; wet samples are tested directly.

Q6: My test data shows poor repeatability, what are the common root causes?

A: 1. Uncontrolled heating rate (too fast or unstable);

2. Insufficient vacuum soaking, air bubbles trapped inside leather matrix;

3. Non‑uniform water temperature (stirrer malfunction);

4. Improper sampling location (leather has property differences across belly‑back area);

5. Specimen clamping too tight / too loose;

6. Temperature sensor not placed close to specimen centre.

Q7. Can ISO 3380 measure above 100 °C?

The standard method covers up to 100 °C; the vessel may be pressurized to go higher, but the prescribed 0.3 % criterion and reporting format target ≤100 °C. For >100 °C (e.g. SATRA TM 17 with glycerol), it is outside ISO 3380 scope.

Q8. Which industries rely on this test?

Tanneries, footwear manufacturers, automotive interior suppliers, furniture leather QC, leather chemical R&D, third-party labs, and certification bodies.

Q9. What does a failed/low Ts tell you?

Under-tanning, weak crosslinking, over-enzyming, acid swelling, or vegetable-tan under-development. It is an early warning before costly line rejects appear.
