Information on the most widely used ASTM standards within the materials testing industry
ISO 14125
Three-point bending test fixture for fiber-reinforced plastic composites, designed in accordance with ISO 14125, provides a standardized method for determining the flexural properties of composite materials using a three-point bending test. The fixture ensures accurate specimen preparation and support, allowing for precise measurement of flexural strength, flexural modulus, and other related properties. This information is crucial for evaluating the performance of composite materials in various applications, ensuring their suitability for structural and load-bearing applications where bending stresses are prevalent, and contributing to the overall safety and reliability of composite structures.
General introduction
Flexural properties are essential for understanding the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites under bending loads. ISO 14125 flexural testing methods:
ISO 14125 bend testing standard is based on ISO 178, but was established with fiber-reinforced plastic composites in mind.
It retains the test conditions relevant for glass-reinforced systems and it’s extended to include both three-point, and four-point, loading geometries. It’s also suitable for flexural strength testing for composites based on newer fibers such as carbon and aramid fibers.
Other source documents consulted include ASTM D790 (four-point loading). The overall specimen length for four-point loading is the same as for three-point loading. The method is not suitable for determining design parameters, but may be used for screening materials, or as a quality-control test.
ISO 14125 flex testing samples
The samples you test for the ISO 14125 flex testing method may be molded to the chosen dimensions, machined from the central portion of the standard multi-purpose test specimen. They can also be machined from semi-finished, or finished, products such as moldings or laminates.
The ISO 14125 plastic test specifies preferred dimensions for the specimen. Tests on specimens of other dimensions, or prepared under different conditions, may produce incomparable results. Other influencing factors to consider include the speed of testing and the conditioning of the specimens.
