General Introduction
UnitedTest is a professional manufacturer of IK vertical impact testing machine, also called IK vertical drop hammer impact tester, designed for IK mechanical impact protection rating verification following IEC 62262 (Degrees of protection provided by enclosures against external mechanical impacts, IK code) and IEC 60068-2-75:2014 Test Eh Hammer Tests, Method Ehc Vertical Hammer. UT2028-IK IK Protection degree impact testing machine is designed according to the Test Ehc vertical impact test requirements in GB2423.55 and IEC 60068-2-75 standards. It is used for testing the mechanical strength of housings for household and similar electrical appliances. Also meet the UL498, Clause SD7.2.
What is the IK protection degree (IK code)?
The IK code (IK rating) is a two-digit international classification of how much mechanical impact energy an enclosure can absorb while still providing its protective function.
Defined in IEC 62262, published in Europe as EN 62262 (which replaced EN 50102), adopted in China as GB/T 20138 (current GB/T 20138-2023 = IEC 62262:2021).
Scope: enclosures of electrical equipment with rated voltage ≤ 72.5 kV.
Scale: IK00 → IK10 (20 J); IK11 (50 J) added by Amendment 1:2021 for special enclosures/grilles in extremely harsh outdoor locations.
IK ≠ IP. IP (IEC 60529) = dust/water ingress; IK (IEC 62262) = mechanical impact. Public and outdoor equipment usually needs both (e.g. IP65 + IK08, IP66 + IK10).
Pass criteria are set by the product standard (IEC 60598-1 for luminaires, IEC 61439-1 for assemblies, IEC 62368-1 for ICT/AV), not by IEC 62262 itself. Typically: no access to live/hazardous parts, declared IP degree maintained, product still functional.

Safety guard / rebound protection for 20 J and 50 J blows, interlock options.
Calibration & traceability — mass/height certificates, optional ISO/IEC 17025 calibration.
Note: configuration is built to customer specimen size, energy set and product standard — confirm the final datasheet, model designation and calibration scope with UnitedTest before publishing.
1. IEC 62262:2002+AMD1:2021
This is the core standard for IK protection classification. It defines IK codes (IK00 to IK10), impact energy requirements, test positions, pass/fail judgment rules for electrical enclosures up to 72.5 kV rated voltage. It specifies that vertical hammer test shall follow IEC 60068-2-75 Ehc for high-energy IK grades such as IK09, IK10IEC Websto....
2. IEC 60068-2-75:2014 Test Eh, Method Ehc Vertical Hammer
Environmental hammer test standard, vertical free drop hammer method. The striker falls vertically without extra horizontal force, controlling fixed drop height and striker mass to output stable impact energy with tolerance ±5%. IK10 uses 5 kg striker, drop height 400 mm, 20 J impact energy.
Define the target IK code from the product standard and installation environment.
Select apparatus: spring hammer ≤ 2 J; vertical or pendulum hammer ≥ 2 J (choose by surface orientation).
Condition the specimen: 15–35 °C, 86–106 kPa; record values.
Mount as in service on the rigid support / nylon plate using its own fixings.
Mark impact points: exposed surfaces, edges, corners, covers, windows, lenses, displays, glands.
Set energy: correct element + guide tube + fall height (±1 %); verify E = m·g·h.
Release with the electromagnetic release; prevent rebound blows.
Apply blows: IEC 62262 — 5 per exposed surface, ≤ 3 near the same point; IEC 60068-2-75 default — 3 per point unless the product standard says otherwise.
Inspect per product standard: cracks, penetration, permanent deformation, access to live parts, loss of IP degree, functionality.
Report: IK code, energies, apparatus, impact points, number of blows, atmospheric conditions, verdict.
Principle: a striking element of defined mass is raised to a specified height, released without initial velocity, and falls vertically through a guideway onto the horizontal specimen surface. Blow must be perpendicular to the surface; secondary rebound blows avoided.
Striking elements (per IEC 60068-2-75):

20 | 5 | Steel | 50 | 100 | 20 | 10 |
50 | 10 | Steel | 50 | 125 | 25 | 17 |
Guide tubes: one dedicated conduit per striking element (Ø40×471, Ø68×385, Ø89×337, Ø108×520, Ø129×650 mm for 2/5/10/20/50 J). The guideway shall not rest on the specimen, and the element shall be free of the guideway at impact; element length ≥ diameter, with adequate clearance to keep friction negligible.
Mounting & conditions: rigid plane support, displacement ≤ 0.1 mm (support mass ≥ 20 × specimen mass is considered rigid); polyamide support plate 8 mm, HRR 85–100 for energies below 1 J; 15–35 °C, 86–106 kPa; correct drop height above 2000 m altitude.

IEC 62262 Degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against external mechanical impacts (IK code)
IEC 62262 defines a classification system (IK code) for the degree of protection that an enclosure of electrical equipment provides against external mechanical impacts, for equipment with a rated voltage ≤ 72.5 kV. It applies only where the relevant product standard actually calls up impact degrees of protection.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
A: Vertical impact tester follows IEC 60068-2-75 Ehc vertical hammer, striker falls straight down, mainly for high-energy IK09, IK10 (20 J). Pendulum hammer swings in arc path, used for medium IK grades. IEC 62262 accepts both methods if matched energy, but many certification bodies specify vertical drop hammer for IK10.
A: Yes, by changing striker mass and drop height. Low IK grades (IK01-IK06) are commonly tested by spring hammer; vertical hammer is more often selected for IK07~IK10 high-energy certification. UnitedTest can supply spring hammer accessory together as one IK test package.
A: Yes. IEC 62262 requires the support structure shall not absorb impact energy. A thin light bench will bounce, reduce effective impact energy and lead to invalid test results for certification.
A: Yes. UnitedTest as professional test machine manufacturer provides custom fixture drawing, machining and validation for special-shaped enclosures, curved surfaces, large-size cabinets.
A: Each UnitedTest IK vertical impact tester is delivered with factory calibration record. We support annual re-calibration service for laboratories for ISO 17025 compliance.
A: Following IEC 60068-2-75, allowable tolerance is ±5% of nominal impact energy. UnitedTest controls height accuracy within ±1% to guarantee energy error inside the range.
A: It can serve related enclosure mechanical impact clauses in IEC 61439, IEC 60598, as long as test method is vertical drop hammer impact.
