ASTM D6182 Leather Finish Flexibility & Adhesion Tester | UnitedTest

ASTM D6182 test assesses cracking, delamination and discoloration of leather surface finish under repeated flexing, visual rank‑rated 0‑5 for dry and wet finished leather. UnitedTest supplies ASTM D6182 compliant leather coating performance testing equipment for tanneries and quality labs.

ASTM D6182 is a widely‑adopted standard test method for evaluating the flexibility and adhesion performance of surface finish coatings applied onto finished leather. This test exposes dry or wet finished leather specimens to repeated flexing cycles and inspects the surface for coating cracking, delamination, peeling and discoloration damage, with wet‑blue leather excluded from its scope.

As a non‑quantitative visual rating test, ASTM D6182 generates a damage rank from 0 to 5 instead of numerical mechanical measurement values, helping leather manufacturers judge coating resilience under bending stress. It is essential for quality inspection of footwear leather, furniture upholstery leather, garment leather and automotive leather materials, verifying whether surface finishing can withstand daily bending deformation without cosmetic failure.

UnitedTest manufactures professional ASTM D6182 compliant leather finish flexibility and adhesion testing machines. Our equipment simulates real‑world repeated flexing conditions, supporting both dry‑state and wet‑state specimen testing to deliver consistent visual‑assessment test data for tanneries, leather product factories, and third‑party material compliance laboratories.

Test Principle:

Finished‑leather specimens are pre‑conditioned (dry or wet state), then subjected to thousands of repeated folding cycles on a Bally Flexometer. Repeated flexing simulates real‑world bending stress. After completing target flex cycles, inspect the finish surface and assign a damage rank (1‑5 scale) to characterize coating flexibility, adhesion and mechanical strength. This is a qualitative‑ranking test rather than a purely numerical measurement.

After a preset number of cycles, the finish is inspected visually (with optional 6× magnification) and assigned a damage rank according to Table 1 (0 = no damage … 5 = finish cracks/peels/flakes off).

Test Specimen Information

Sampling: Follow ASTM D2813 (Practice for Sampling Leather for Physical and Chemical Tests);

Specimen size: 45 mm × 70 mm per piece.

Quantity & orientation: Two specimens per sample; one cut parallel to the leather backbone, the other cut perpendicular to the backbone, to capture anisotropic leather behaviour.

Test Procedures of ASTM D6182 Test Method for Flexibility and Adhesion of Leather

1. Move the upper clamp of Bally Flexometer to its uppermost position.

2. Fold the test piece in half along its major axis, with the finished‑coated surface facing inward at the fold.

3. Insert folded specimen into the top clamp and securely tighten the top clamp.

4. Wrap the specimen downwards around the top‑clamp assembly.

5. Gently pull the leather to eliminate slack, position the downward folded segment vertically into the bottom clamp, then tighten the bottom clamp. Proper mounting must ensure zero tension between top and bottom clamps (see Figure 1 in standard document);

6. Reset cycle counter to zero and set cut‑off value to the target number of flex cycles.

7. Run flexing until the preset cycle count is reached.

8. After stopping the instrument, examine finish damage by naked eye or with the 6 ± 1× magnifying glass.

9. Assign damage rank according to below Table of the standard.

Why the Test Is Important for the Material

Finished leather’s aesthetic and functional life depends on the finish system (top coat, base coat, adhesion to substrate). Poor flexibility/adhesion causes:

Cracking at flex points (toe box, finger joints, seat creases)

Peeling/flaking of coating

Discoloration and early visual failure

ASTM D6182 gives brands, tanneries, and QA labs a repeatable, comparative workflow to screen finish formulations, compare dry vs. wet performance, and reject leather that would fail in real use — without needing expensive quantitative instrumentation.

FAQs for ASTM D6182 Test (Flexibility and Adhesion of Finish on Leather)

Q1: What is ASTM D6182‑23 test used for, and why is it important for leather industry?

A: ASTM D6182‑23 evaluates finish flexibility, coating‑to‑leather adhesion and finish strength for finished leather by repeated flexing on Bally Flexometer. It simulates real‑life bending stress from footwear uppers, leather bags, upholstery and leather apparel. Static visual inspection cannot detect hidden coating weakness. This test catches risks of cracking, delamination, peeling and discoloration before mass production, reduces product complaints, supports supplier qualification and finish formulation R&D. Note: this standard does NOT apply to wet‑blue leather.

Q2: What equipment do I need to run ASTM D6182‑23?

A: Primary instrument is Bally Flexometer complying with ISO 32100, running at fixed speed of 100 cycles/minute. Additional accessories: cutting die for 45 mm × 70 mm specimens, 6±1× magnifying glass, distilled/deionized water, blotting paper for wet‑test blotting.

Q3: What are the specimen requirements for ASTM D6182‑23?

A: Specimen dimension: 45 mm × 70 mm. Two specimens per sample: one cut parallel to leather backbone, one cut perpendicular to backbone, to cover leather anisotropic performance. Sampling must follow ASTM D2813 sampling practice.

Q4: What is the difference between dry‑leather test and wet‑leather test in this standard?

A: - Dry test: Condition specimens following ASTM D1610 standard conditioning procedure.

- Wet test: Immerse specimens in distilled/deionized water for 20 min ±1 min, blot off surface free water before mounting for flexing.

Wet test simulates real‑world moisture exposure; many leather finishes lose adhesion under wet condition. If you use custom conditioning other than defined procedures, you must document all conditions in test report.

Q5: Why is sample mounting so critical for ASTM D6182‑23? What common mounting mistakes cause bad results?

A: Specimen must fold along major axis with finished side inward, mount between top and bottom clamps without pre‑tension between two clamps.

Common mistakes: over‑stretching leather during clamping, slack not removed, wrong folding direction (finish side outward). Improper mounting will create artificial stress and lead to premature cracking or inconsistent ranking.

Q6: How do I judge test results? What is rank 1‑5 damage scale?

A: After finishing preset flex cycles, inspect surface with naked eye or 6±1× magnifier, assign rank per Table 1:

1 = No damage

2 = Discoloration or thin cracks only in top finish coat

3 = Cracks extend into finish base coats

4 = Large cracks exposing leather substrate

5 = Finish cracks, peels back or flakes offASTM Inter....

This is a qualitative visual ranking test, not quantitative numerical measurement.

Q7: Does ASTM D6182‑23 specify a fixed number of flex cycles for testing?

A: No. The standard does not define mandatory cycle count. Lab or buyer sets target flex cycles according to product specification. Report must clearly state cycle number, conditioning mode and rank for each specimen in final report.

Q8: Can I use ASTM D6182‑23 for wet‑blue leather?

A: No. Scope explicitly excludes wet‑blue (semi‑tanned intermediate leather). It applies only to fully finished leather goods raw materials.

Q9: What typical industries run ASTM D6182‑23 testing?

A: Footwear upper leather, leather bags & accessories, furniture upholstery leather, automotive interior leather, leather garment factories, third‑party testing laboratories, leather finish chemical R&D labs.
