ASTM D3167 Peel Resistance Adhesives Test - Floating Roller test method covers the determination of the relative peel resistance of adhesive bonds between one rigid adherend and one flexible adherend when tested under specified conditions of preparation and testing.
ASTM D3167 is a standard testing procedure used to measure the average peel strength or force of adhesives and bonding agents by using a floating drum peeling device. This test can be used to compare adhesives or adhesive surface preparation procedures. Therefore, ASTM D3167 is commonly used in product development and manufacturing processes. ASTM D3167 is particularly useful when the flexible substrate is not flexible enough to perform accurate standard 90 degree or 180 degree peel tests. In ASTM D3167, flexible substrates are bent around a drum rather than their own sharp bending radius.
Prepare test sample:
In order to obtain the best results in ASTM D3167, your sample should be 12.7 millimeters (0.5 inches) wide, the rigid bonding material should be 8 inches long, and the flexible bonding material should be 10 inches long. An additional 2 inches are used to wrap the flexible adhesive material around the curved drum of the D3167 floating roller peeling fixture.
Test Procedure:
The sample can be cut in any way, and this test does not require a sample cutting machine. The floating drum peeling device should be connected to the upper adapter, and another fixture suitable for flexible bonding material should be attached to the lower peeling tester adapter.
The sample component is slid into the middle of the drum. Wrap the flexible adhesive material around the guide roller of the drum and attach the sample to the lower fixture. Through this arrangement, when the flexible bonding material is pulled downwards by the lower fixture, the flexible bonding material peels off from the rigid bonding material at a 65 degree angle, with a larger bending radius.
During the peeling process, the rigid bonding material rolls in the drum device. Run the peel tester at a speed of 6 inches per minute to ensure recording of force and displacement, and collect the average peel force within the displacement range through software.
Then calculate the average peel force and standard deviation of the average peel force between all samples.
