The Rolling Ball Tack Test quantifies exactly that: how large a steel ball (i.e., how much kinetic energy) the adhesive can stop within a defined distance. Dual Test Principles (Two Official Methods)

Method A (Inclined Plate Rolling Ball Method): A standard steel ball rolls down a sloped plate across the adhesive tape’s surface. The maximum steel ball number that can be fully stuck and held for ≥5s on the 100mm measuring section determines tack strength; larger ball number = stronger initial tack.

Method B (Inclined Groove Rolling Ball Method): A fixed No.14 steel ball rolls from a 21°30’ inclined groove onto horizontal PSA tape. The rolling distance on the adhesive surface quantifies tack; shorter travel distance = higher initial tack.

Key Test Stipulations (Easy to Miss)

Ball pre-selection: Trial rolls allowed on same specimen beforeformal test, but those data are discarded. Formal run uses 3 specimens × max ball found.

If a specimen fails to hold the max ball → drop to next-smaller ball for that specimen. 

Result reporting (Method A): median ball number of 3 formal runs.

Result reporting (Method B): arithmetic mean stopping distance of 3 specimens.

No finger contact with cleaned chute / ball (Method B especially strict).


Step-by-Step Test Procedures

Method A Operation Flow

Level the tester with built-in bubble, set inclined plate to target angle (30° standard)

Fix specimen adhesive-side up on the slope with 500g weight, attach 100mm polyester auxiliary film without bubbles/wrinkles

Clean selected steel ball repeatedly with solvent cloth, air dry completely

Place ball at standardized starting position, release to roll down through auxiliary segment onto adhesive measuring area

Pre-screen: Test balls from small to large, find the maximum ball stuck for ≥5s on measuring section

Formal test: Test 3 separate specimens with the confirmed maximum ball number; replace with smaller ball if any sample fails to hold it

Record 3 ball numbers, take median as official tack test result

Method B Operation Flow

Clean inclined groove and No.14 steel ball with solvent, avoid finger contact after cleaning

Flatten specimen adhesive-side up on horizontal rigid test plate, fix edges to prevent warping

Secure inclined groove tester level above specimen, align groove outlet with tape surface

Place No.14 steel ball at starting position, trigger release switch to roll onto adhesive film

Measure rolling distance from groove end to stationary ball center

Repeat test on 3 independent specimens, calculate average distance as final tack value.
