ISO 9237 Textiles — Determination the permeability of fabrics to air

What is ISO 9237 test method?

ISO 9237 is a method of testing the breathability of a fabric. It can be applied to a wide range of fabrics, including woven, nonwoven, and industrial fabrics for technical reasons. In this method, the rate of airflow passing perpendicularly through a given area of fabric is measured. The differential pressure for the entire fabric test area and time has been determined. Nowadays, air permeability testers are very advanced because they require the machine to start and provide airflow values.

ISO 9237 Sample Preparation

Take samples that are at least 1 meter in length and width.

Usually, it is not necessary to cut the sample to any specific size for gas permeability testing.

Take at least 3 samples or as needed.

Adjust the sample in accordance with ISO 9237

Leave the sample under standard atmospheric conditions for about 4 hours, i.e., 20 ± 2°C and 65 ± 4% relative humidity.

How does the ISO 9237 air permeability test verify test results?

The validation of ISO 9237 air permeability testing mainly involves the following aspects:

Comparison of test standards: Common air permeability tests include ASTM D737–1996, GB/T 5453–1997, and JIS L1096–1999, of which GB/T 5453–1997 is equivalent to ISO 9237–1995.

DIN 53887 Textile Tests - Standard Test for Determination of Air Permeability of Textile Fabrics

GOST 12088-77Textiles and articles. Method for the determination of air permeability
GOST ISO 9237-2013Textiles. Method for determination of the permeability of fabrics to air

Test Method: Different fabrics may require different test methods. For example, JIS L1096–1999 has two methods: A and B. Method A uses a Fraser type air permeability tester. Method B uses a Greeley-type air permeability tester. Choosing the right test method is essential to get accurate test results.

All test standards mention measures to prevent air leakage. They require the use of specimen grips and rubber gaskets. Rubber gaskets can deteriorate and deform due to repeated use. This will affect the test results. Therefore, you should replace them regularly. Specimen grips are suitable for some fabrics, but not all. So, when testing different fabrics, choose the right fixture.

Comparison of test results: The same fabric can be tested with different test methods, taking UT4070 digital fabric air permeability instrument as an example, the test standard is GB/T 5453-1997 and ASTM D737-1996, which tests the air permeability of cotton fabrics, and the test results of different standards are different.

Factors that affect breathability: Fabric material, structure, and thickness all affect breathability. When validating test results, consider the impact of these factors. For example, fabrics such as cotton and nylon will differ in their breathability.
