ASTM WK51649 is a draft standard (work item) under development by ASTM Committee F04.22 on Arthroplasty . It proposes a test method for evaluating the fatigue resistance of total knee femoral components under closing conditions, similar in scope to ASTM F3210. ASTM WK51649 Fatigue testing of the metal femoral component of a total knee joint prosthesis is conducted to establish the F-N curve at different load levels and to determine the fatigue limit of the sample under 10 million cycles.

ASTM WK51649 represents a proposed evolution of fatigue testing standards for total knee femoral components. While it shares the core concept of evaluating components under "closing conditions" with ASTM F3210, it aims to provide more comprehensive fatigue characterization, potentially with higher cycle counts and additional parameters.


At this time, ASTM F3210 remains the only recognized standard for this testing purpose. ASTM WK51649 should be considered a work in progress that may eventually lead to an updated or alternative standard once fully developed and approved through ASTM's consensus process.

For regulatory submissions and official use, manufacturers should continue to rely on the established ASTM F3210 standard until ASTM WK51649 completes its development and receives formal approval.
