Introduction Plastics Tensile Test and equipment for Properties of Plastics ASTM D638, plastic tensile testing machine, ASTM D638 tensile tester;
ASTM D638 : Standard Test Method for Tensile Properties of Plastics specifies methods for testing the tensile strength of plastics and other resin materials and for calculating their mechanical properties, and outlines accuracy requirements for the test frames and accessories used. This test method uses dumbbell-shaped specimens with either a 25 mm or 50 mm gauge length.
Test Specimens
ASTM D638 references several different types of test specimens depending on the material being tested, material thickness, and characteristics displayed when it breaks. Methods of preparing test specimens include injection molding, machining operations, or die cutting from materials in sheet, plate, slab, or similar form. Please refer to the most recent published standard to obtain the exact dimensions of the samples.
ASTM D638 Type I is the most preferred specimen for rigid plastics in the shape of a dumbbell with a total length for 165 mm (Lo), a thickness of 3.2 mm (1/8 inch) and a gauge length of 50 mm (2 inches). Narrow width is 13mm (W).
ASTM D638 requires the following to be calculated:
Tensile Strength;
Percent Elongation;
Percent Elongation at Yield;
Percent Elongation at Break;
Nominal Strain;
Nominal Strain at Break;
Modulus of Elasticity;
Secant Modulus;
Poisson’s ratio (Need The Transverse Extensometer).
The Testing recommend the 5KN single column UTM, or 20KN tensile testing machine.
Grip recommend wedge grip or Vice grip.
